Coming Soon: Use a Personal Email Address to Reset Forgotten AD Password
| |
Next month, we’ll be introducing a new method to reset your employee Active Directory (AD) password if you have forgotten it. Effective May 9, 2023, if you have entered a personal, non-ucsd e-mail address in UCPath, you may use the password management portal password.ucsd.edu to have a reset link sent to this personal account. This change is being made to improve the security of the password change process and remove the use of personal information for this purpose.
Additionally, effective May 9, 2023, you will no longer be able to use personal information (employee ID, Social Security Number, and birthday) to change your AD password if you don’t know it.
Note: You can always contact the campus and Health IT service desks for password changes; see contact options and hours below.
Recommended Action: Input or Update Personal “Home” Email Address in UC Path Please visit the Personal Information section of UCPath to verify, update or input a personal email address in the Home option under Email Type. (Employee Information -> Personal Information -> Personal Information -> Email Addresses) Though there are multiple personal email address types in UCPath, only the Home one will be used for AD password resets.
The Knowledge Base Article (KBA) “How to Update Personal Information in UCPath” (KB0032873) explains how to update the Home email address.
A personal email address refers to a non @ucsd.edu email address like those offered by Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, AOL and others.
Remember, your Active Directory account is used for critical campus and Health Sciences services like email, Ecotime, Canvas and more, so you’ll want to ensure you have a quick and do-it-yourself method to reset your AD password in case you ever forget it.
Who Uses UCPath? All UC employees, including campus staff, academic employees, student staff, and Health personnel, use UCPath for payroll, benefits, and human resources administration. Contingent workers, such as contract staff, volunteers, research associates, and others, may or may not use UCPath depending on departmental setups. If you’re unsure if you use UCPath, please check within your department.

Other Notes and Clarifications
- The new procedure only applies if you have forgotten or don’t know your AD password. You can still change your AD password directly at password.ucsd.edu if you know your password.
- Students can already use a personal email address to change their student AD password; however, the new procedure applies to their employment AD account.
- If a personal email address is not found in the Home email address field of UCPath, you’ll need to contact the campus or Health IT service desks for help resetting your password if you’ve forgotten or don’t know your AD password.
