Bettina L. Love to Deliver Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Lecture
| |
You are invited to attend the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion’s lecture series on Wednesday, April 26. The Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion began the lecture series in 2015 with the goal of featuring high profile speakers to address relevant issues in equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice. This year, we are proud to host award-winning author and the William F. Russell Professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, Bettina L. Love. Join us for Love's talk, "We Gon' Be Alright, But That Ain’t Alright: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom." She will discuss the struggles and the possibilities of committing ourselves to an abolitionist goal of educational freedom, as opposed to reform, and moving beyond what she calls the educational survival complex.
Abolitionist teaching is built on the creativity, imagination, boldness, ingenuity, and rebellious spirit and methods of abolitionists to demand and fight for an educational system where all students are thriving, not simply surviving. Love’s writing, research, teaching, and educational advocacy work meet at the intersection of disrupting education reform and strengthening public education through abolitionist teaching, antiracism, Black joy, and educational reparations.
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Click here to register no later than Thursday, April 20.
Co-sponsored by the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science, the event will be held at UC San Diego Park & Market from 5 – 7 p.m. Check in begins at 4:30 p.m. Hors D'oeuvres and beverages will be served. Parking is available at Padres Parkade (440 11th Ave., San Diego, CA, 92101).
We would like to thank the Division of Extended Studies for partnering with us on this event.
