Get EV Charging Discounts by Participating in a Campus Research Study

UC San Diego faculty and Transportation Services are conducting a research study on electric vehicle charging. By signing up to be a study participant—whom we call Triton Chargers—you will support important research about how EV drivers charge their vehicles in shared spaces, such as a university campus. This study is open to UC San Diego students, faculty and staff who are over 18 and drive an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle.

This research is aimed at improving the overall charging experience on campus while helping California policymakers learn how to cut emissions effectively and affordably from the transportation sector—the nation’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. UC San Diego’s Institutional Review Board that oversees human subjects research has approved this project.

By registering to join the Triton Chargers, you will be offered rebates for on-campus charging as well as information about your charging options. Rebates will be offered during randomly chosen weeks throughout the study year, but every member will, over the lifetime of the project, be offered the same total savings. Triton Chargers will also be the first to hear about what we learn as the research unfolds. In tandem, we will ask that you respond to one initial survey and occasional, brief follow-up surveys that will help us understand your charging needs and preferences. Don’t worry—participating in this study will never increase your charging rates or restrict when or where you can charge.

As compensation for your time, all Triton Chargers will be automatically enrolled in the UC San Diego EV Charging Club (if not already members), which will give you an ongoing $.05/kWh (~20%) discount for on-campus charging—even when the research ends. In addition, all Triton Chargers will be automatically entered each month into a drawing for two $50 virtual Visa gift cards.

To join, all you need is an account with each of our two participating EV charging vendors: ChargePoint and PowerFlex. To activate your discounts, be sure to log into your ChargePoint account and click the ChargePoint Connections tab to link yourself to the UC San Diego EV Charging Club. Set up just takes a few minutes (if you haven’t already) and get your user IDs handy.

When you’re ready to join the Triton Chargers, complete the consent form and a brief enrollment survey (~20 minutes). After you enroll, you will begin receiving the discount immediately through the campus EV Charging Club. Then, deeper discounts related to the research study will begin in May 2023.
