In 2021, Google announced they would no longer offer the no-cost G Suite for Education with unlimited storage to universities. Instead, they introduced Google Workspace for Education as a fee-based service with fixed storage limits. This will have minimal effect on the vast majority of UC San Diego faculty, researchers, students and staff, and to maintain access to these vital communication and collaboration services for our UC San Diego community, the university will cover the cost of the core service.
To accommodate the storage restrictions, UC San Diego will shift to a managed storage model. The initial phase involves introducing storage quotas for faculty and staff accounts. Our dedicated project team has carried out a comprehensive analysis of Google storage usage across campus to develop storage quotas that minimize disruption while efficiently allocating resources.
The primary objectives of the quotas are to:
- Ensure economical use of storage resources
- Affect as few faculty, students and staff as possible
- Foster fairness and equity in resource allocation
- Allow for adequate storage to accommodate future campus growth
Quotas will be implemented for all existing faculty and staff accounts on June 6, 2023. These quotas have been designed based on current usage patterns to minimize any disruption to individual accounts.
- Those currently using 0 GB - 0.8 GB will be allocated a storage quota of 2 GB
- Those currently using 0.9 - 100 GB, and above, will be allocated a storage quota of 100 GB
