Dear UC San Diego Students,
In 2021, Google announced that unlimited Google Drive storage would no longer be offered to universities, and would be replaced by a fee-based service with a fixed and limited amount of total campus storage. This will have minimal effect on the vast majority of UC San Diego students, and the university will cover the cost of the core service to maintain access for our students.
Over the next two years, UC San Diego will be transitioning to this new managed storage model, which necessitates storage quotas on all accounts.
The primary objectives of the quotas are to:
- Impact as few students, faculty and staff as possible
- Ensure efficient and cost-effective utilization of storage resources
- Promote fairness and equity in resource allocation
- Avoid over allocation of storage and ensure headroom for future campus growth
Quotas will be applied to all current student accounts on October 30, 2023. These quotas are based on current usage to have minimal impact on individual accounts:
- Those currently using 0 GB - 0.8 GB will be allocated a storage quota of 2 GB
- Those currently using 0.9 - 20 GB (and above) will be allocated a storage quota of 20 GB
