Mental Health Awareness Month, May 2023 | |
Supporting mental health is a systemwide priority for the University of California, and UC San Diego is proud to be at the forefront of this effort. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which is an opportunity to remind everyone in our Triton community of UC San Diego’s comprehensive programs, counseling and support resources designed to help our students, faculty and staff flourish—in May, year-round and particularly during times of stress. The need for mental health support is not new, but access to resources has become increasingly important for many in our community as we have collectively navigated stressors associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and many consequential world events.
Along with our many student support and success initiatives, we provide quality counseling and effective mental health resources in a holistic continuum of care. Over the past decade, we have invested in improving and bolstering our student mental health offerings. We continue to invest in building access to mental health and student success resources, with transformative projects such as the forthcoming Triton Center, which will open in 2026 as a fully integrated student, faculty and staff health center, centralizing resources and providing even more access to comprehensive mental health support services.
Mental Health Awareness Month Events
As part of the Tritons Flourish Initiative, UC San Diego’s Student Health and Well-Being (Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Health Services, and Health Promotion Services) has partnered with departments across campus (including Recreation and the Vice Chancellor Student Affairs' office) to create in-person and remote well-being programs and events for undergraduate, graduate and professional students as well as staff and faculty throughout the month of May. These events include Tritons RISE Together workshops, community forums and self-guided online interactive programs. To view a full calendar of events, please visit our online May events calendar.
The kick-off event for Mental Health Awareness Month will be Tritons Flourish @ UC San Diego. On Tues., May 2 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., students can come by the Price Center Plaza to pick up a green ribbon and write gratitude letters, participate in “sensory stations” at The Zone, enter a free raffle and learn about the benefits of positive psychology.
Move for Mental Health is another featured event from May 1 - 5, including a week of movement-based classes highlighting the benefits of physical activity on mental well-being. Students can attend a variety of designated classes, learn about mental health resources on campus and pick up free swag. See https://caps.ucsd.edu/may for details for both events.
