As a student-centered, research-focused, patient-centric, service-oriented public university, UC San Diego is committed to Principles of Community that foster the best possible working and learning environment for all. These principles empower our campus community to actively cultivate and maintain a climate of fairness, cooperation, and professionalism, as well as a welcoming educational environment in which all members feel valued and respected. Simply, they are vital to the sustained well-being of our Triton community.
Our Principles of Community reinforce our shared responsibility to foster a respectful, equitable and just campus. As a public university, we fully embrace and uphold the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, which guarantees the right to free expression to all individuals within our community. Our Principles of Community create an expectation that free expression and our treatment of one another are to be conducted within the bounds of courtesy, sensitivity, confidentiality, and respect.
The UC San Diego community extends beyond our students, faculty, and staff–it includes alumni, donors, visitors, patients, contractors, individuals across our graduate, undergraduate and professional schools, and our nationally ranked health system. For our community to thrive, open dialogue and thoughtful debate are fundamental. We welcome opportunities to engage with diverse viewpoints inside and outside of the classroom. Cultivating an inclusive climate for all begins with treating everyone with dignity and respect.
To enhance the global prestige and distinction of UC San Diego, all members of our community must commit to our Principles of Community, and strive to embed them within their teams, cohorts, and departments. To reinforce this ongoing commitment, the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion has created a mini-grant program to highlight campus units and organizations that recognize the Principles of Community as fundamental to our identity as a university. The program will provide funding for projects aimed at developing programming or activities that reinforce and demonstrate these guiding principles. Priority will be given to proposals that demonstrate high potential to integrate and emphasize the Principles of Community as central tenets for a more equitable campus climate. Visit the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion's website for application details.
We encourage all departments and organizations to consider ways to fully incorporate the principles in your areas. With your help, we will continue to promote civil dialogue and meaningful engagement with differing perspectives and enhance the excellence of our institution.
Thank you for your willingness to commit to our collective goal of achieving a campus community in which everyone feels included, valued, and respected.
