We are pleased to announce the reappointment of Professor John Moore as the Dean of the Division of Undergraduate Education, effective July 1, 2023, following a positive administrative review and recommendation of reappointment by the review committee.
We thank the Dean of Undergraduate Education Five-Year Review Committee and its chair, Professor Robert Pomeroy, for conducting a comprehensive review. The committee members noted that Dean Moore is a committed academic leader who has demonstrated his complete commitment not only to UC San Diego, but its faculty, staff, and most assuredly, its students. His leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic was essential to helping maintain an effective learning environment, whether students needed to remain on campus, or learn remotely, and he also strategically worked to ensure students’ safety and a smooth return to campus.
The committee recognized Dean Moore’s leadership in creating, articulating and implementing a distinctive vision of undergraduate education through his work on establishing Seventh and Eighth Colleges, including developing their curricula and themes – leveraging his experience as a provost and his understanding of the university structure and how it operates. Those who provided feedback from the colleges noted Dean Moore’s commitment to the colleges and his advocacy for their academic and operational excellence, as well as his promotion of a culture of diversity to support student belonging and success at UC San Diego. The committee also noted his impact on improving the overall undergraduate academic experience as reflected in the UC Undergraduate Experience Survey (UCUES) – with overall undergraduate student satisfaction at UC San Diego increasing from 34 percent in 2018 to 49 percent in 2022.
The committee also recognized Dean Moore for his shaping of a vision for a community of DEI scholars across campus and his guidance and leadership on the implementation of Holistic Teaching Evaluations. They also deeply appreciated his role in guiding our campus through the stringent and lengthy WSCUC review process culminating in the maximum-possible 10-year reaffirmation of reaccreditation in 2020.
In his capacity as Dean of the Division of Undergraduate Education, Dean Moore serves as the undergraduate liaison with the San Diego Division of the Academic Senate, serving on the Undergraduate Council and consulting with other committees. He was praised for his leadership in this area, in particular his role in curriculum innovation and reform, leading to an expansion of the scope and courses satisfying the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) graduation requirement. He was also praised for being pivotal in the development of Holistic Teaching Evaluations as the primary instrument to assess teaching effectiveness.
Perhaps most importantly, Dean Moore was praised for being a thoughtful and positive leader who is a valuable resource and collaborator with offices across campus. His commitment to students and the undergraduate educational experience, and his use of assessment to make data-driven decisions about the effectiveness of programs now, and going into the future was lauded.
Please join us in recognizing Dean Moore for his numerous accomplishments and continued service. We look forward to his continued leadership guiding undergraduate education at UC San Diego.
