Project Purpose:
The Ridge Walk North Living and Learning Neighborhood project replaces low-density structures built in the 1970’s to create a living and learning neighborhood within the center of UC San Diego’s campus. The project will provide 2,400 undergraduate student beds, and support the university’s academic mission by providing updated administrative and teaching space for Thurgood Marshall College, the School of Global Policy and Strategy and the Department of Economics in the School of Social Sciences. The neighborhood includes 19 new classrooms and a lecture hall for campus-wide academics as well as student dining, wellness programming, student support services, study lounges, coworking spaces and public realm improvements, such as outdoor gathering spaces and public art.
Location and Duration:
In mid-June, the project fence-line will be established around the Marshall Lowers area and Marshall Field including parking lots P302, P308 and P309. Construction will start immediately following Commencement ceremonies, with
project completion anticipated during the Winter Quarter 2026.
Immediate Parking Lot, Street Traffic, and Pedestrian Impact:
- A section of Ridge Walk from the Communication building to the Social Sciences building will be closed during the summer months of 2023, 2024 and 2025. Alternative pedestrian and bicycle routes can be viewed via the map link below.
- Pedestrian and bicycle access will be affected in the areas adjacent to the project site. See affected areas and available campus connectivity via the map link below.
- Access to Hopkins Parking Structure will be maintained throughout the duration of the project. Vehicle access will not be available to the Communication building during the construction process.
- Marshall Field and parking lots P302, P308 (Marshall Lowers), P309 (Hopkins Dr.) will be closed for the duration of construction, beginning June 19, 2023.
