With congratulations on an exceptional tenure of service and leadership to UC San Diego, Angela Fornataro McMahill will be retiring from her role as Assistant Vice Chancellor, Research Compliance and Integrity (RCI), effective June 30, 2023.
In 2016, Angie was promoted to Executive Director of RCI and later the role was elevated to Assistant Vice Chancellor. Angie was responsible for oversight of Conflict of Interest, Export Controls, Institutional Animal Care and Use (IACUC), and Research Integrity, further integrating compliance program elements for greater service and efficiency for faculty and research staff. She has led our Office of Research Compliance and Integrity to become a national leader in meeting increasingly complex compliance policies and requirements.
She has committed more than 30 years of service excellence to UC San Diego.
As government regulations and requirements began to expand and grow, we needed someone extraordinarily well-qualified in addressing the complexities of research and the security, conflicts and ethics. Angie helped UC San Diego take the lead in developing an RCI office.
During her tenure, Angie has helped support and guide UC San Diego’s research community from program and contract management to her current role as a campuswide champion of Research Compliance and Integrity. She has moved our campus forward in immeasurable ways, including streamlined reporting, enhanced training opportunities and diligent service.
Angie previously served as Conflict of Interest Director and Research Compliance Program Director in UC San Diego Health Sciences. She holds a Juris Doctor degree and is certified in Healthcare Compliance, Research Compliance and Privacy and is a Certified Clinical Research Associate. Angie also served as the San Diego Chapter President of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals.
Angie’s tenacity in developing a program from scratch has reaped rewards and accolades at national and international levels, including high praise from the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the FBI.
During a visit, Dr. Mike Lauer, Deputy Director for Extramural Research at the National Institutes of Health said, “UC San Diego is best in class for its research compliance program and foreign influences monitoring.”
Our stellar reputation in this field is largely attributed to Angie’s leadership. We thank her and wish her the best in her well-deserved retirement.
Sincerely,
