Update on Space Management and Planning Efforts

Space on our campus is a valuable asset. The university is studying how space is being used in order to provide a better experience for our faculty, students and staff, support campus safety and ensure responsible and best use going forward.

UC San Diego currently uses several methods that are common in a university setting to gather data, including badge swipes, visual observations, Wi-Fi and network analysis, threshold sensors and sensors in the parking structures.

Starting in 2018, UC San Diego implemented a Live Density Program in more than 50 buildings on campus, using a technology created by an alumnus to measure occupancy information in public realm, instructional and administrative spaces.

In Fall 2023, the program will expand to cover most administrative, academic and research spaces, but will exclude clinics, clinical research areas and student residences. A series of meetings will be scheduled before the Fall Quarter to share information and gather feedback.

University of California campuses and similar-sized higher-education institutions use this technology to manage space efficiently, and we want to assure you that the university will not use the data for any purposes other than space management and planning. Also:
  • The sensors would not show who is in a building, but rather the overall number of people in a region of a building.
  • The occupancy information about administrative, academic and research spaces will only be available to administrators and campus leaders involved in campus space management.
  • For public realm spaces, students and community members can continue to use the UC San Diego mobile app to assess wait times as they plan their visits to libraries, dining halls and gyms.
Additional information on this initiative to understand and optimize campus space is available on the Live Density Program website. The Q&A on this page was informed by questions received during presentations in meetings held across the campus. Please feel free to send any questions on the program to rmpfeedback@ucsd.edu.
