In addition to the incidents described in Timely Warnings sent for burglaries over the past few weeks, the UC San Diego Police Department has received several other reports of unlawful entries into residential spaces around campus. Many of these incidents occurred because residents did not lock their doors. In two of these cases:
- One suspect was arrested for trespassing.
- A reporting party described the suspect as a male, approximately 5'6" with a "buzz cut" hair style. He was wearing a white shirt with blue and/or red stripes.
The UC San Diego Police Department would like to remind all residents to lock doors and windows, including sliding doors, when leaving your residence to help reduce these types of incidents.
If you have information that could be helpful in identifying any suspects in these incidents, please call the UC San Diego Police Department at (858) 534-4357 or send an email to
detective@ucsd.edu.
The remainder of this message provides general information about preventing and reporting a burglary or other unlawful entry into a residence and is not necessarily related to this incident.
If you are the victim of a burglary or you discover someone inside your residence:
- If possible, immediately leave your residence and go to a safe area (e.g., a neighbor’s apartment or a public place).
- Call or text the UC San Diego Police Department at 9-1-1.
- If you are unable to leave your residence, secure yourself and family members in a safe location, turn on all available lights, and call the police immediately.
To help reduce the risk of being the victim of a burglary or trespass:
- Make sure doors and windows are closed and locked. When it is hot out, use a lock or item which only allows the window to open small distances.
- If you live on campus and your windows or doors won’t lock, please call Housing Maintenance at (858) 534-2600.
- If your office windows or doors won’t lock, please call Facilities Management. Visit https://hdhfacilities.ucsd.edu/
- Be aware of your surroundings. If you see suspicious activity, call or text the UC San Diego Police Department immediately at 9-1-1.
- Know the location of campus emergency telephones on routes to and from campus destinations.
- Avoid displaying and/or placing high value items close to windows. Items such as computers, cell phones, wallets, and purses can be easily grabbed from open windows and may be incentives for criminals to try and enter the residence. Secure your valuables at all times.
- Be alert and aware. Pay full attention to who is around when you leave and return to your residence or office. If returning at night, leave a light on inside as a visual deterrent.
What is this Notice?
Although these incidents did not reach the threshold of a burglary or other crime requiring a Timely Warning to comply with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the UC San Diego Police Department is issuing this Community Alert Bulletin to better inform the campus community of crime on campus and provide crime prevention tips.
