UC San Diego Health Named to Elite National Honor Roll by US News & World Report | |
It is with great pride that we share the most current rankings from the US News & World Report “Best Hospital” survey. UC San Diego Health has sustained its No. 1 metro ranking and is tied with UCLA, UC San Francisco, Cedars-Sinai and Stanford Health for first place in California.
For the first time in the academic medical center’s history, UC San Diego Health was also placed on the 2023-2024 Best Hospitals National Honor Roll, a distinction awarded to only 22 hospitals nationwide that are recognized for outstanding patient care.
These data-driven rankings are validation of our critical role in the region for providing safe high-quality health care to our community and to patients across the United States.
For the 2023-2024 rankings and ratings, U.S. News & World Report evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 21 procedures and conditions.
Among these, UC San Diego Health ranked in 10 specialties:
- Cancer (20)
- Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery (23)
- Diabetes & Endocrinology (39)
- Ear, Nose & Throat (14)
- Gastroenterology & GI Surgery (18)
- Geriatrics (17)
- Neurology & Neurosurgery (21)
- Obstetrics & Gynecology (15)
- Pulmonology and Lung Surgery (9)
- Urology (32)
Only 12% of evaluated hospitals earned a Best Hospitals ranking, a designation given for medical providers that excel at factors such as clinical outcomes, level of nursing care and patient experience.
UC San Diego Health is also rated as “high performing” in 18 common procedures and conditions, which cover a spectrum of care from heart procedures and treatment options for acute kidney failure, to orthopedic and cancer surgeries, and stroke care. Performance was evaluated using a variety of measures such as survival rates, discharge to home, reputation, complication rates, patient experience and level of nursing care. The Best Hospitals methodology also factors in data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, American Hospital Association, professional organizations and medical specialists.
The Best Hospitals Survey methodology factors in data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, American Hospital Association, professional organizations and medical specialists; recent changes include a greater emphasis on objective quality outcomes and health equity.
We recognize and congratulate UC San Diego Health team members for their contributions, day and night, in the care of the community, especially those who face challenging, often life-threatening health conditions.
In addition to top rankings in US News & World Report, UC San Diego Health is recognized as having the highest level of safety from The Leapfrog Group with an “A” for both campuses and is top ranked nationally among Comprehensive Academic Medical Centers by Vizient Inc. for demonstrating excellence in delivering high-quality care. Further, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid and Services (CMS) recognized UC San Diego Health as a five-star institution for the quality of our care.
These combined rankings and ratings are affirmation that academic medicine at UC San Diego Heath – a unique combination of patient care, research and teaching – distinguishes itself as a health care approach that is at the forefront of medical and surgical care.
