We are delighted to invite your participation in the annual New Student Welcome Convocation to be held on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2022 at 4:30 p.m., on RIMAC Field.
Convocation is the inaugural academic event for all incoming students – graduate and undergraduate, first year and transfers – and serves as their formal entrance into UC San Diego's scholarly community. It is the figurative bookend to Commencement. This year's program will feature remarks by Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla, Executive Vice Chancellor Elizabeth H. Simmons and Associated Students President George Chi Ioi Lo.
Strong faculty participation in this milestone event demonstrates the great value we place in this symbolic first step on our students' academic journey. Students also frequently comment about how meaningful it is for them to have faculty in attendance with them at this event. We hope you will join us in extending our new students a warm Triton welcome at Convocation.
Participating faculty will join in the Convocation Processional at the start of the ceremony, and will be seated facing the audience as an extension of the platform party during the program. Faculty participants are invited to assemble at a reception beginning at 3:30 p.m., and no later than 4 p.m., at a designated staging tent on the west side of RIMAC Field (detailed instructions will be sent to those who RSVP). The platform party and faculty processional will begin at 4:15 p.m. led by incoming Senate Chair John Hildebrand. The event will last one hour and regalia will not be worn.
The health and safety of our campus community continues to be of utmost importance to us. Masks will be available to all attendees, but will not be required. Current COVID-19 safety protocols will be followed. Childcare will be available. More information on the childcare being provided will be shared in September.
Please RSVP online by Tuesday, Sept. 19 with your attendance plans. We look forward to seeing you at Convocation.
