Welcome to a new academic year!
As the Senate Chair and Vice Chair, it is a privilege and a responsibility to represent the interests of the faculty, both within the Senate and with the Administration. Thank you for your faith in us, and for your contributions to shared governance.
We encourage you to reach out throughout the year at senatechair@ucsd.edu and senatevicechair@ucsd.edu, and we look forward to your active participation in Senate affairs. To keep informed of ongoing issues, visit our website (senate.ucsd.edu) for information on the work performed by Senate committees and topics under review. Below are a few opportunities to connect with us during the coming year:
- Representative Assembly. All Senate members are invited to attend Representative Assembly meetings. The Senate Chair, Chancellor and/or the Executive Vice Chancellor address the Assembly and provide updates to the faculty on current topics of interest. New graduate degree programs and modifications to Divisional Senate bylaws and regulations, which govern Senate operations and the curriculum, are presented for a vote by the Assembly. Attending Representative Assembly meetings is a great way to stay informed and to participate in the UC San Diego community.
All Assembly meetings will be held on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. on the dates below. The meetings will be held via Zoom. Meeting agendas are posted on the Senate’s website five instructional days before each meeting.

- Winter Quarter Discussion Forums. We will be holding a series of discussion forums during Winter Quarter to hear from you about your priorities and concerns. Additional details and registration information will be provided at the start of Winter Quarter.
- Quarterly Lunches with the Senate Chair and Vice Chair. We will be hosting quarterly lunches from noon to 1 p.m. at the Faculty Club for groups of interested faculty on November 14, February 7, and May 2. Please sign up and join us!
- Faculty Club Happy Hours. In addition to the above events, we plan to join the Faculty Club Happy Hours from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on October 12, January 18, and April 25. Drop in and join us! There is no need for advanced notice. These are great opportunities to engage with us in a relaxed setting.
Finally, we would like to express our profound gratitude to Past-Chair Nancy Postero for all her efforts on behalf of the Senate last academic year. Nancy’s leadership on a range of issues contributed enormously to our campus’ well-being. The UAW strike in the fall/winter was challenging for all of us and her leadership proved to be invaluable during the strike and its aftermath. The repercussions of the strike continue to be felt and it is crucial for all of us to contemplate how going forward we can help with healing and collaboration within the campus community.
