The university is studying how the valuable space on our campus is being used in order to provide a better experience for our faculty, students and staff, support campus safety and ensure responsible and equitable use going forward.
Starting in 2018, UC San Diego implemented a Live Density Program in more than 50 buildings on campus using a technology created by an alumnus to measure occupancy information in public, instructional and administrative spaces. The Live Density technology provides information for 2,500 square-foot or larger spaces, looking at the density of people in a space as compared to the total number of “seats” available. The calculations have been shown to be about 90 percent accurate.
This fall, the program is planned to be expanded to cover most administrative, academic and research spaces, but will exclude clinics, clinical research areas and student residences.
We invite you to an upcoming town hall scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023, at 2 p.m., where we will share information, listen to feedback, gather ideas, and answer questions.
Data collected as part of the Live Density Program will not be used by anyone at the university for any purposes other than space management and planning. Also:
- The sensors do not show who is in a building or where exactly anyone is, but rather the fraction of occupied seats in a region of at least 2,500 square feet.
- The occupancy information about administrative, academic and research spaces will only be available to administrators and campus leaders involved in campus space management.
- For public spaces, students and community members can continue to use the UC San Diego mobile app to assess wait times as they plan their visits to libraries, dining halls and gyms.
Additional information on this initiative is available on the Live Density Program website, including a Q&A informed by questions received during department meetings held across the campus over the past year. Additional questions on the program can be asked during the Town Hall, registration form, or they can be sent to rmpfeedback@ucsd.edu.
We hope you will attend the town hall if you are interested and able to do so.
