As part of University of California’s (UC) ongoing commitment to creating a safe and healthy working environment, UC has launched a required system-wide training on preventing workplace violence. This training is in support of the Workplace Violence Prevention Program and in accordance with the requirements of California Labor Code section 6401.9. This requirement is applicable to all UC San Diego employees, including staff, academics, student employees, and UC San Diego Health Sciences. This requirement excludes sworn law enforcement officers and UC San Diego Health System employees who are assigned enhanced Workplace Violence training for their specific roles.
In a letter to the University Chancellors, President Michael V. Drake, M.D., explains the importance of this initiative. “UC is excited to announce that it is taking another important step to create a healthy work environment and prevent workplace violence: starting this year and consistent with new state law, UC is building a new set of trainings, tools and plans to prevent workplace violence through a newly implemented Workplace Violence Prevention in General Industry Center of Excellence (WPVPGI CoE). The WPVPGI CoE has engaged employees at each UC site to ensure workplace violence prevention plans are created that support our community and meet the new state law requirements.”
As a member of the UC community, you are required to complete the online Workplace Violence Prevention course through UC Learning Center within 60 days of receiving the assignment. The training is designed to help members of the UC Community understand and report workplace violence, and to be able to recognize and respond to escalating behavior. It should take approximately 25 minutes to complete. If you are unable to complete the training in one session, you can save your place and complete it at a later time. The training is available in English and Spanish, and is accessible to screen readers.

We hope no one on this campus is ever subject to workplace violence, and thank you for your part in ensuring that UC San Diego is a safe and healthy environment for everyone.
