A zero-day vulnerability is a previously unknown software security weakness that can be exploited by attackers before a patch is available. These vulnerabilities can pose a significant threat and can be mitigated through robust security measures and regular software updates.
Apple has released critical security software updates for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, visionOS, and the Safari web browser to address two actively exploited zero-day vulnerabilities. These flaws affect systems running macOS Sequoia, Safari Browser in macOS Ventura and Sonoma, as well as iOS17 (under 17.7.2) and iOS18 (under 18.1.1).
If your device is managed by UC San Diego IT support teams, be on the lookout for a notification from your computer that an update is available for download/installation, your computer prompting you to download/install an update, or an email from your local IT group about the updates that need to be installed and how that will happen.
If your device does not have UC San Diego IT support, or is a personal device, we strongly encourage you to manually apply the necessary security software updates as soon as possible by going to System Settings/General/Software Update. Step-by-step instructions can be found by searching for “Software Update” on support.ucsd.edu and follow the guidelines provided in the appropriate knowledgebase article.
