The Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences (VCMS) reports to the Chancellor and also serves as the Director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Dean of the School of Marine Sciences. The VCMS will lead the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) in articulating a clear scientific vision, provide direction for its academic programs, expand revenue sources, and optimize the administrative organization. The Vice Chancellor represents and provides leadership nationally and internationally in scientific matters related to the ongoing research efforts of SIO scientists and in relations with Federal, State and local governmental entities and private organizations and individuals.
We are seeking an innovative leader who will promote Scripps' and the School of Marine Sciences’ scientific and educational mission. They should be an innovative leader with a demonstrated successful record in strategic planning, administration and fundraising. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential, together with an understanding of, and commitment to, academic shared governance.
Through a series of listening sessions with various constituencies on campus, the search firm will develop a comprehensive position profile that includes challenges and opportunities for the next Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences. The Search Advisory Committee will begin reviewing candidates soon after the position profile is developed and will continue until the position is filled.
