Curriculum Management System Project Underway
Phase
1 of the CourseLeaf for curriculum management project kicked off for the internal implementation team on January 17, 2024. The CourseLeaf Project is one of many efforts currently underway as part of the Enterprise Systems Renewal (ESR) Student Information System (SIS) Project. SIS Project governance and the core team have been working to prepare for the start of the project since announcing the selection of CourseLeaf by LeepFrog as the campus’ new curriculum management system.
Project Summary
The
CourseLeaf project is implementing a new system for managing course and
program approvals, as well as catalog management. CourseLeaf will not be used to manage course content; course content will continue to be managed via our learning management system (LMS), Canvas. The CourseLeaf
curriculum management system is a single, configurable tool to serve the entire university that supports and enhances the curriculum process from planning to implementation to assessment.
Where We Are Now
After
a comprehensive stakeholder and university readiness evaluation, project governance voted to move forward with the project kickoff. The project’s first release focuses on course and program approvals, which are currently manual and labor-intensive processes. Streamlining course and program approval processes will improve our ability to deliver new and innovative educational offerings.
The SIS Project core team collaborated with project governance and subject matter experts to choose the participants for the teams and committees supporting the CourseLeaf Project. As a result, an established implementation team is now responsible for achieving technical and functional objectives, a steering committee to provide strategic guidance and decision-making, and an advisory committee for tactical guidance. The selected members bring their unique knowledge and expertise in the course, curriculum, and catalog processes that will contribute to project success — full participant information can be found in the article Preparing for Kickoff.
Next Steps
Implementing
course and program approvals within CourseLeaf is the project's first phase. The phased approach should help limit the impact of the many changes brought about by the SIS Project.
Phase 1 - Course and Program Approvals:
This implementation will replace eCourse and go live before the new SIS
goes live and will be integrated with ISIS, our existing SIS, in the interim, unless there are unexpected integration issues with ISIS.
Phase 2 - Catalog Management: Implementation will begin after the new SIS is live.
Phase 3 - Program Review and Assessment: Planning for this implementation will begin during the completion of Phase 2.
Extensive preparation and planning have gone into identifying campus needs for a curriculum management system, helping define the project scope and specific areas of focus.
The CourseLeaf implementation team is committed to achieving success and optimal results by closely engaging with the vendor and partnering with key stakeholders, including faculty and staff, to align on project requirements and execution.
The SIS Project sponsor, EVC Elizabeth H. Simmons, and the governance committee appreciate the support from the Academic Senate and stakeholders who have participated in and supported the project thus far.
