GSR Appointments in Fall 2024 and Beyond

Dear Colleagues,
A recent settlement between the UC System and the UAW mandated, among other things, an adjustment to certain Spring 2024 GSR appointments within a number of UC San Diego graduate programs, bringing those appointments to 50%. Many of you, including our students, have asked about the strategy going forward, once this mandated Spring 2024 adjustment has been fulfilled.
It remains true that the language of the settlement reinforces the rights of UC campuses to appropriately appoint GSRs at less than 50%. However, after considering the alternatives and their implications, we have decided to follow the general pattern we established for incoming graduate students in Fall 2023. Namely, effective Fall 2024 all academic-year GSR appointments in all UC San Diego units will be required to be either a single 50% FTE or, where appropriate, a combination of multiple graduate academic appointments that add up to a 50% FTE.* As has always been true, academic programs may set the salary point for GSR appointments, while adhering to any requirements outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
We recognize that this decision will have a financial impact, and we encourage graduate programs to work with their deans and school leadership to plan for this change.
We hope that the simplicity and clarity of this strategy will be beneficial to all concerned and will support the essential scholarly mission of the university.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth H. Simmons

* In limited instances, a unit may wish to appoint a student to a low-percentage GSR appointment when such appointment does not constitute the primary funding mechanism for the student.
