Women’s Herstory Month is upon us, and I couldn’t be more proud to celebrate the amazing movers and shakers and history makers who have blazed the trail for us.
And as I reflect on some of the women I look up to the most (with my mom at the top of that list), one thing is very clear to me: there is no shortage of fearless, formidable women surrounding us. But they didn’t become that way by chance.
They became that way because people believed in them along the way. Because they were given an opportunity. And because they were allowed to step into their power and show up as their true, authentic selves.
Many women also have no choice. They have had to blaze trails to overcome stereotypes. They’ve had to accept less pay for more work, to make ways for women coming up behind them. They have had to appear less strong to not be threatening, while also not appearing soft and too “emotional.” They’ve had to persevere in the face of the ever present systems that were not built for the purpose of their success.
Which reminds me of Amy Rees Anderson’s famous words: “Strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.” And I’ll add to that – may we empower and uplift each other, reminding ourselves that once upon a time there was a special someone who took a chance on us, too.
Continue reading to learn all about the on-site festivities honoring women this month, along with other valuable updates. And speaking of festivities, I want to extend heartfelt wishes for a Happy Ramadan to all who celebrate. Ramadan Mubarak!
Lead with grace and courage,
Terri S. Winbush
Campus Chief Human Resources Officer
