Please join us in congratulating Elizabeth (Liz) Johnson for being selected as UC San Diego’s nominee for the YWCA San Diego County Tribute to Women & Industry (TWIN) Award, which recognizes extraordinary achievements of women in managerial, executive or leadership roles.
Liz Johnson is a distinguished leader with 24 years of experience in healthcare, social services and research. Currently serving as the Administrative Director of the UC San Diego HIV Institute, San Diego Center for AIDS Research, and UC San Diego Pandemic Response to Emerging Pathogens, Antimicrobial Resistance and Equity Institute, Liz helps shape the strategic vision and goals for each entity.
Previously, Liz was the Executive Director of Christie’s Place for 14 years, where she transformed it into a nationally recognized agency for HIV-affected women and families. Her leadership extended beyond her organization, as she chaired the National Women and AIDS Collective and contributed to numerous advocacy initiatives.
Liz's contributions have earned accolades such as the American Red Cross Tiffany Award and the County of San Diego’s Dr. Brad Truax Award. A graduate of Rutgers University with degrees in political science and women’s studies, Liz further honed her management acumen through Pepperdine University and the UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management. Her dedication to health equity and community empowerment underscores her commitment to advancing healthcare for key populations.
Each year, the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women (CSW) invites nominations for women to be considered for the YWCA Tribute to Women & Industry (TWIN) Award. Since 1981, CSW has alternated nominating UC San Diego faculty/academics and staff women for the award. Liz and other colleagues throughout the San Diego area will be recognized at a citywide ceremony later this month. Please join us in applauding Liz’s dedication, service and leadership.
