This year marks the 18th annual Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Celebration at UC San Diego. The month-long commemoration honors the Asian and Pacific Islander American identity and recognizes the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture and achievements of the United States through a series of events, lectures and seminars. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate in this annual series of events. A full calendar of events can be found on Blink.
This year’s theme is “Transformation Through Innovation and Unity: Embracing Change Through Solidarity to Drive Progress.” This theme highlights the importance of innovation and unity within the Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) community to drive positive change and progress. By coming together in solidarity and collaboration, we can inspire innovation, foster understanding, and pave the way for a brighter future.
The annual kickoff luncheon and scholarship awards will be held on May 2, 2024, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the Price Center West Ballroom and will feature live cultural entertainment and keynote speaker Alex C. Villafuerte. Villafuerte is Executive Director for the Pacific Arts Movement, Co-Founder for the San Diego Queer APIMEDA Coalition, and Co-Chair for the San Diego Asian Pacific Islander (API) Coalition. Alex leads the PAC ARTS organization during a milestone year, overseeing the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the San Diego Asian Film Festival. Alex is a Filipino-American and a dedicated community organizer and advocate who has championed the rights and empowerment of marginalized, intersectional communities and individuals.
In addition, scholarship awards will be presented to our undergraduate, graduate and alumni scholars.
In recognition of this annual event, two hours of administrative leave with pay have been approved so that employees may participate in the annual celebration activities. Supervisors, upon request, may approve the use of such leave when the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.
We thank the members of the planning committee for their work in coordinating these educational and celebratory campus activities. Please join us and our campus community in honoring the legacy and contributions of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans.
