Deal Colleagues,
The UC San Diego campus community is in turmoil related to campus protests and administration actions related to those protests. The presence of outside law enforcement on campus speaks volumes about the difficulties we face. In addition, the UAW, representing graduate student researchers and TAs, is conducting a vote to authorize a strike related to these events.
Senate leadership has been actively engaged, with the goal of representing the interests of the faculty. Our overriding principle is empathy for those impacted by these events. Our goal is to heal the campus community. The campus Principles of Community require civility and decency toward all, and these should be taken as more than performative statements.
We have been hearing from Senate colleagues of the need for more information and faculty engagement. We will hold an informational and open discussion session for Senate faculty tomorrow (Friday, May 10) from 12:30-2:30 p.m. via Zoom (Register here). The goal of this session is to disseminate information on current events, as well as to create an opportunity to gather faculty input. The Senate looks forward to working with faculty to help the campus navigate these difficult times.
