Dear Colleagues:
We have been made aware that a protest walking tour may be approaching lab spaces starting today, Monday, June 3, at 2 p.m.. These protest organizers have said they are focused on labs that they believe are working on defense-related projects. We do not have information about which specific labs the protest might include. As with all free expression activities, while the university supports their right to free expression, we want to prioritize safety first and foremost, as well as protecting research and learning continuity.
Over the weekend, the university recommended to Principal Investigators (PIs) with defense-related grants that they take extra precautions during these protests, including:
- Limiting entrance to labs to only include only authorized project personnel
- Letting their teams know that a potential protest could include their lab
- Instructing personnel to work virtually, if possible
- Contacting Labor Relations if protestors arrive at a lab
In the interest of safety and to promote research continuity, university leadership has asked Facilities Management to limit lab building and/or lab floor access to individuals with legitimate business purposes.
PIs are encouraged to relay or request information regarding disruptions or recommended protocols via fusioncenter@ucsd.edu. This account will be monitored during extended working hours and the information will be forwarded to relevant groups. The Fusion Center/EOC phone number is 858-583-3053.
If you have reason to fear for your immediate safety or the safety of any of your personnel, call campus police by dialing 911 or (858) 534-HELP (4357).
