We are thrilled to announce that Kellie Uyeda has joined the Office of Research and Innovation as the new executive director of the UC San Diego Natural Reserve System. Her first day was June 24. Kellie brings a wealth of experience and passion for environmental education and advocacy to her new role.
Kellie's journey with the Natural Reserve System began in 2020 when she started as a lecturer for the Coastal Ecology course within the Environmental Studies program at UC San Diego. This hands-on course, which includes field trips to Kendall-Frost Marsh and various coastal ecosystems, exemplifies her dedication to experiential learning and environmental stewardship.
Prior to her role as executive director, Kellie served as a Research Scientist at the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, where she played a pivotal role in organizing Love Your Wetlands Day for the past four years. She has a bachelor's degree in Environmental Systems from UC San Diego, a master’s degree in Ecology from San Diego State University, and a Ph.D. in Geography from UC Santa Barbara and SDSU.
Throughout her career, Kellie has demonstrated a strong commitment to connecting communities with the natural beauty of San Diego's ecosystems. She is eager to enhance community engagement with the Reserve System and foster greater appreciation and understanding of our local environment.
