UC San Diego Health Named No. 1 in San Diego, Earns Second Consecutive National “Honor Roll” Recognition from U.S. News & World Report

It is with tremendous pride that we share that UC San Diego Health has once again secured the No. 1 ranking in San Diego on U.S. News & World Report’s annual “Best Hospitals” survey. For the second year in a row, we are also recognized on the coveted “Honor Roll” — a distinction awarded to only 20 hospitals in the nation that provide exceptional patient care.

Being named to the “Honor Roll” for the second consecutive year and No. 1 in the region for the fifth consecutive year underscores our unwavering commitment to excellence in patient care. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our entire UC San Diego Health team, who work tirelessly to ensure our patients receive the highest quality care possible every day.

The 2024-2025 U.S. News & World Report survey evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions. Among these, 11 of our specialties made the list— the most in the top 50 in UC San Diego Health history:

  • Pulmonology & Lung Surgery (10)
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology (12)
  • Geriatrics (19)
  • Neurology & Neurosurgery (22)
  • Gastroenterology & GI Surgery (26)
  • Heart & Vascular (27)
  • Diabetes & Endocrinology (34)
  • Ear, Nose & Throat (40)
  • Cancer (42)
  • Urology (43)
  • Orthopedics (44)

UC San Diego Health was also rated as “high performing” in 18 common procedures and conditions ranging from heart procedures and stroke care to cancer and orthopedic surgeries. That’s more than any health system in San Diego.

UC San Diego Health also tied for No. 1 in California along with UCLA Health, UCSF Health, Stanford Health Care, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

The “Best Hospitals” survey methodology factors in data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, American Hospital Association, professional organizations, and medical specialists. Rankings are determined by an extensive data-driven analysis combined with performance measures in structure, process, and outcomes.

We recognize and congratulate UC San Diego Health team members for their contributions, day and night, in the care of the community, especially those who face challenging, often life-threatening health conditions.

In addition to top rankings in US News & World Report, UC San Diego Health is recognized as having the highest level of safety from The Leapfrog Group with an “A” for both academic medical campuses and is top ranked nationally among Comprehensive Academic Medical Centers by Vizient Inc. for demonstrating excellence in delivering high-quality care. Further, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid and Services (CMS) recognized UC San Diego Health as a five-star institution for the quality of our care.

These combined rankings and ratings are affirmation that academic medicine at UC San Diego Heath – a unique combination of patient care, research and teaching – distinguishes itself as a health care approach that is at the forefront of medical and surgical care.
