Senior Executive Director of Public Relations Matt Nagel Named Interim CCMO
After a successful tenure leading UC San Diego’s communications and marketing initiatives and serving as a key member of my Cabinet, Chief Communications and Marketing Officer Anne Buckley will depart UC San Diego on September 3, 2024, to accept the role of Vice President for Marketing and Communications at the University of Maryland. I am grateful for her service and leadership, which have had a significant impact on our university’s reputation and visibility – locally, regionally and globally.
As the inaugural Chief Communications and Marketing Officer, Anne revolutionized our communications function, building a collaborative and integrated central team and spearheading the development of our first-ever university-wide strategic communications plan. During her tenure, Anne demonstrated exceptional leadership and strategic vision, guiding University Communications through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the abrupt shift to remote learning and work. Despite these obstacles, she successfully raised awareness of our priority initiatives, contributing to our rise in U.S. News and World Report rankings from No. 10 in 2020 to No. 6 among public universities in 2024.
Over the years, Anne’s counsel has been invaluable to me and my entire leadership team. Her legacy in elevating our communications function, both internally and externally, and raising awareness of the university’s prestige and distinction will be long-lasting and far-reaching. Please join me in congratulating Anne on her outstanding achievements and wishing her all the best in her new role.
I am pleased to announce that Senior Executive Director of Public Relations Matt Nagel will serve as Interim CCMO starting on August 12, 2024. Matt brings a strong strategic communications leadership background to this interim role, having led communications for several research universities in addition to his successful tenure at UC San Diego, during which he has served as acting CCMO in Anne’s absence. Additional announcements regarding a search will be made in the coming months.
