Dear UC San Diego Colleagues,
A little more than 18 months ago, I assumed the role of Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, and I’d like to take a moment to reflect on a few key milestones and what I’ve learned about this incredible organization.
Our nationally ranked health system and three academic schools, as well as our numerous research institutes and centers, combine to play a pivotal role in advancing the university’s broader mission. UC San Diego Health Sciences holds 54 percent of the university’s total active research awards and a majority of its philanthropic endeavors. What’s more, our clinical footprint spans the entire region and is growing, underscoring our commitment to serving our community.
I’ve been consistently struck by how UC San Diego, at such a young age, competes with some of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious institutions. Consider our No. 13 ranking in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, of which we are the newest among the top 13 universities in the nation by almost 100 years.
UC San Diego’s ability to achieve remarkable milestones in a relatively short period of time is no accident. Rather, it is a testament to the university’s unwavering dedication to fostering an entrepreneurial spirit, which has been a cornerstone of our institution since its founding in 1960 and is carried on today by Chancellor Khosla, with whom I’ve been honored to collaborate.
This spirit pervades the Health Sciences and allows us to push the boundaries of science, education and community engagement, all toward the greater goal of improving human health and wellbeing. Our connection to the community, both locally and throughout California, is vital, and we are now poised to make a significant impact on a national scale.
This potential is evident through our top rankings and accolades. Notably, our health system has been named the No. 1 health system in San Diego by U.S. News & World Report and is among only 20 hospitals nationwide to make the Honor Roll for providing exceptional patient care. Our medical and pharmacy schools are on the cusp of breaking into the top 10 nationally, and I am excited to see the future recognition of our public health school once it is eligible for official ranking. These accomplishments reflect the dedication of our extraordinary clinicians, academics, staff and learners.
I hope you’ll take some time to view this short video that celebrates some of the major accomplishments and milestones from UC San Diego Health Sciences in 2023-24:
