Dear Colleagues,
While the start of fall term is still about a month and a half away, we have a wide variety of offices engaged in the final phases of securing our incoming undergraduate class of first-year and transfer students. We are writing to keep you informed of some key details around the Fall 2024 entering cohort as you plan for the upcoming academic year.
Overall, our incoming first-year undergraduate numbers are projected to be 6 percent higher than 2023, and incoming transfer numbers are projected to be 15 percent higher than 2023. This growth – roughly 1,000 more new students than last year – has been planned in response to the evolving expectations under the Governor’s funding compact. At the level of individual departments, there is a mix of growth and decrease.
If you are in a department that will see large growth or a significant decrease, then your department chair, dean, and associate deans will already know about this based on a projection report that has been sent to them. We have asked them to take immediate note of how this might impact the department’s fall classroom needs. Please note that classroom changes to best suit class sizes to rooms will be undertaken after new student enrollment is complete later this month.
Departments are encouraged to ensure their academic advising staff are involved in department planning as they will be on the front lines of answering questions and can advise students on the best options based on course capacity and waitlists. College advising teams will also be offering new student advising throughout the summer and are available to help support students in understanding their options.
College orientations have been adjusted to absorb the additional capacity and the Council of Provosts has been actively engaged in helping Enrollment Management strategize the balance of incoming class sizes across the eight colleges.
The growth of our campus continues to be a long-term, purposeful goal as part of our access mission as a public research university. Thank you to all of you whose student-centered efforts will make this another successful year.
Sincerely,
