Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements related to financial aid

Dear Faculty,

As we prepare for the upcoming 2024-25 academic year, we write to inform you of a new state law impacting students receiving Cal Grant funds from the California Student Aid Commission: Assembly Bill No. 789.

All students receiving financial aid must meet specificSatisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements. In an effort to ensure students are well informed about the SAP requirements necessary for maintaining their financial aid eligibility, AB 789 requires the institutions to request that campus faculty include information about UC San Diego’s SAP requirements and the appeals process in their course syllabi, beginning in the 2024-25 academic year.

While it is not required that faculty include this language, we ask you to consider adding this important financial aid information in your course syllabi. We are including suggested text that could be added to your course syllabi:

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) refers to the academic standards students must maintain to remain eligible for federal, state, and institutional financial aid. If you are receiving financial aid, please ensure you review the SAP requirements and the appeals process.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have about this request.

Thank you for considering this request and for your partnership in supporting our UC San Diego students.
