We are pleased to announce the appointment of John R. Baumann as the new Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Compliance and Integrity.
Baumann brings over 30 years of experience in research administration, compliance oversight and upholding ethical standards. His expertise overseeing Conflict of Interest, Export Controls, Research Integrity and programs related to Human Research Protection Programs and Animal Care and Use will be invaluable as UC San Diego continues to maintain and grow one of the nation’s most innovative, pioneering and interdisciplinary research ecosystems.
He will join our team as AVC for the division on January 27.
Baumann will report to Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation Corinne Peek-Asa and lead our ethics and compliance teams under a shared vision of excellence in its commitment to responsible and ethical research practices.
Baumann is the former Associate Vice President for Research Compliance at Indiana University, where his oversight included the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses, as well as its five regional campuses and affiliated hospitals. His extensive background includes leadership in research development, grant administration, and the management of compliance with critical regulations governing human subjects research, animal welfare, conflict of interest and research safety standards.
Baumann earned his master’s degree and Ph.D. in sociology from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and he has held significant roles in both academia and private research institutes. Before his current position at Indiana University, he served as Vice Provost for Research at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and as Deputy Executive Director at the National Development and Research Institutes (NDRI), a leading behavioral science research organization. His work at NDRI, which focused on critical public health issues such as substance abuse and HIV/AIDS, reinforced his strong understanding of the intersection of research, ethics and community impact.
In addition to his leadership roles, Baumann is a recognized authority in the research compliance and integrity field. His professional activities have included serving as a site visitor for more than 20 years and former Council member for the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP). He has also served multiyear terms as a member of the American Association of Medical College’s Forum on Conflict of Interest Steering Committee, a co-Chair of Education and Professional Development Committee of the Society for Research Administrators International, and member of the Plenary and Keynote Planning committee for Public Responsibility in Research & Medicine annual conferences.
Baumann has worked with numerous universities, hospitals and organizations in the United States and abroad, in particular Asia and Africa, to ensure compliance with ethical research standards.
Baumann's breadth of experience, combined with his deep commitment to the responsible conduct of research, makes him an ideal fit for the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Compliance and Integrity at UC San Diego. We are confident that his leadership will enhance our research infrastructure, ensuring that our community continues to conduct groundbreaking, ethically sound research that adheres to the highest standards of excellence.
My deepest thanks to the committee leaders and participants in our national search for this position which included many well-suited, experienced and knowledgeable applicants.
Please join us in welcoming Baumann to UC San Diego. We look forward to his significant contributions to our research compliance efforts and the continued success of our academic community.
