Issuance of Revised Academic Personnel Manual (APM) Section 710, Leaves of Absence/Paid Sick Leave/Paid Medical Leave and Related Section 240, 246, 700, 711, 715, 730, 759, 760

A revised Academic Personnel Manual (APM) Section 710, Leaves of Absence/Paid Sick Leave/Paid Medical Leave was issued on May 31, 2024 with an effective date of January 1, 2025.

Key policy revisions include:

Expansion of eligibility for paid sick leave, including ensuring that part-time academic appointees have access to paid sick leave;
Expansion of the reasons for which an academic appointee may use paid sick leave;
Provision of “protected” paid sick leave so an academic appointee may be entitled to take the leave for a qualifying reason; and
Extension of the period during which paid sick leave may be reinstated if an academic appointee is reemployed after a separation from employment.

Please note, Systemwide Labor Relations is working with bargaining unit representatives to expand paid sick leave options for represented employees, subject to applicable bargaining requirements.

Additionally, to better align related policies with the revised APM 710, various technical revisions have been made to APM 240, 246, 700, 711, 715, 730, 759, and 760 effective January 1, 2025.
