Fire-Related Road Closure Impacts to Classes

Dear Colleagues,

Due to a fire in the area of Gilman Drive and Via Alicante, this afternoon, Thursday, January 23, several roads were closed, including northbound Gilman Drive at La Jolla Colony Drive. While evacuation orders and warning have been lifted, the road closures remain in effect which could impact students’ ability to get to in-person class sessions in the late afternoon and evening.

We ask that faculty exercise flexibility and extend understanding during this situation and provide an option for students who are unable to attend in-person class sessions, or move to a remote class session for today, if possible. If faculty or TAs make adjustments to class sessions, we would ask that they post the information to Canvas and that students monitor their Canvas and email accounts for information related to class sessions that may be impacted.

Instructors should consult with their department chairs with any questions regarding this impact, which is not expected to continue beyond today. We are grateful to the first responders who were able to bring the fire under control quickly and we thank you for your flexibility in this situation and your continued dedication to the success of all students.

Kind regards,

Robert Continetti
