Special Election Approaching: U-Pass Is On The Ballot

UC San Diego students will vote on the Student Transportation Fee Referendum, impacting the future of the Triton U-Pass, between January 27, 2025 at 10 a.m. PST and 4 p.m. PST on January 31, 2025. Triton U-Pass guarantees fare-free access to regional public transit to UC San Diego students. Vote by logging on to Triton Link and find more information at https://u-pass.ucsd.edu/vote.

Authorization for the Student Transportation Fee (U-Pass Fee) expires following spring quarter, meaning that the U-Pass program will expire if voting falls short of the 20% participation required or if voting meets the participation requirement yet fails to reach majority (50%+1) support.

Pass or fail, this referendum will significantly impact the experience of all UC San Diego commuters, including faculty and staff. Faculty and student-facing staff are encouraged to make note of the opportunity for students to vote and encourage student participation in the referendum process.

If passed, this referendum will both continue unlimited San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and North County Transit District (NCTD) bus and trolley access for all fee- paying graduate and undergraduate students and add additional services and program enhancements, including:

  • Free transit all summer for continuing students and new graduates
    • Only three quarters of fees will be assessed; however, services will be extended to cover summer quarter
  • All NCTD+, FLEX and COASTER services, a significant service expansion
  • Funding for new and existing student transportation programs
    • Fully funds and supports the Triton Transit Grocery Convoy Shuttle service
    • Funds and supports the expansion of Triton Mobility and late-evening On-Demand services to 2 a.m. weekdays
    • Provides dedicated funds for student-driven initiatives and priority transportation projects, guided by the UC San Diego Student Transportation Advisory Committee (STAC)

Triton U-Pass was created by students in 2014 and was enthusiastically renewed in 2018. The program provides students with affordable, equitable and sustainable transportation. The program has provided over 30 million rides since its inception in 2014 and 98% of student survey respondents report using U-Pass to help them get to campus or around San Diego. The program is expected to provide over 5 million rides in the current academic year alone.
