Academic Senate Updates to the Campuswide Graduation Requirements - Distance Education Policy

Dear Students,

As we start the new academic year, the Division of Undergraduate Education would like to inform you of an important policy change that takes effect Fall Quarter 2025.

Students may not complete 50 percent or more of the total units earned at UC San Diego through courses that are designated as distance education (e.g., R-courses), unless enrolled in a major that is approved as a distance education program.

No undergraduate degrees are approved as distance education programs at UC San Diego. This policy takes effect for all undergraduate students Fall Quarter 2025, regardless of admit type or term. Please be mindful of this policy when enrolling in remote (R) courses.

This policy was approved in June, by UC San Diego’s Academic Senate and will amend San Diego Senate Regulation 600, Campuswide Graduation Requirements, Section B.

For questions about how this applies to your degree, please contact your college academic advisors.
