Community Alert Bulletin – Fire Safety Awareness

Between September 27 and October 2, 2025, the San Diego Fire Department and the UC San Diego Police Department responded to four small fires located in the canyon on the east side of Interstate 5, between the freeway and Mesa Housing.

This is the approximate location of the fires: https://maps.app.goo.gl/cAbjdScTRHM11R5D9

Based on initial investigations it does not appear that these fires were set intentionally, but it does appear that they were the result of campfires or for cooking purposes.

The UC San Diego Police Department (UCSD PD) has been working closely with CalTrans and the California Highway Patrol to conduct area checks. UCSD PD is also performing extra patrols to quickly detect potential future fires and to address any safety concerns.

Should you see any signs of smoke or fire, or identify other safety concerns in or around the canyon, please call UCSD Police immediately.

  • The person(s) responsible for starting the fires has not yet been identified.
