I am pleased to announce that Lawrence Furnstahl has been appointed to the position of Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration (VCFA). He will join UC San Diego on January 1, 2026.
Lawrence Furnstahl’s selection follows a national search for an experienced administrator with demonstrated success at managing budgetary and administrative initiatives for a large, public research university. He is an accomplished financial administrator and executive adviser with extensive expertise in strategic, financial and operational management of universities and academic health centers. As VCFA, Lawrence will provide leadership and direction for the development and financing of the UC San Diego enterprise, overseeing strategic financial planning and management, budget development, real estate, capital finance and self-supporting revenue areas.
Lawrence has held various leadership and executive positions in academic and academic health organizations. He brings more than 37 years of experience in higher education finance, including his current role as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), where he has led the university's financial strategy, budget, revenue cycle, government and private reimbursement, treasury, accounting and disbursements. During his tenure at OHSU, Lawrence has successfully increased revenues by 150%, net worth by 125% and improved credit ratings. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping the university's financial growth and stability. Prior to his role at OHSU, Lawrence served as Chief Financial Officer at The University of Chicago Medical Center and Biological Sciences Division. His experience in financial planning, budget development and financial management has prepared him well for his new role at UC San Diego.
As VCFA, Lawrence will be responsible for overseeing the financial and administrative functions of the university. He will report to the Chancellor and be part of the Chancellor's Cabinet and leadership team, serving as the senior executive officer and Chief Financial Officer for all of UC San Diego's Campus and Health Sciences financial resources. Lawrence will provide strategic and tactical leadership for the university, advise the Chancellor and the university's executive leadership team on strategies and initiatives articulated in the Strategic Plan, and ensure that the university's financial, residential, retail, supply chain, human resources and information technology services support institutional priorities.
With his leadership, experience and expertise, Lawrence is poised to make a transformative impact in his new role. We look forward to working with him and supporting him as he leverages his skills and knowledge to drive UC San Diego's continued success. Please join me in congratulating and welcoming him to UC San Diego.
