Dear Colleagues,
Educational innovation — new teaching and learning methods, technologies, curricula, and learning environments — is and will continue to be at the core of who we are at UC San Diego as innovation is part of our ethos.
In light of budget cuts and anticipated changes to federal funding and other monetary sources that support our educational and research missions, it has become necessary to examine not just the work that we do, but the structure and approach within which we continue to do that work in Academic Affairs.
Therefore, the structure of the Educational Innovation (EI) unit is changing. We will not be hiring a new Associate Vice Chancellor for Educational Innovation (AVC-EI) and the EI unit will not be preserved in its current configuration. We will be transitioning all of the personnel working under the Interim AVC-EI to other units within Academic Affairs.
This move is critical to preserving the faculty, student, and department-facing functions of EI while removing administrative layers and related costs. Let me reiterate that this change is not a result of deficiencies in the current structure of EI, but rather a way to allow us to continue this important work in a more fiscally conservative way. Below is a high-level summary of the changes that are to come.
