The remainder of this message provides general information about preventing and reporting a burglary and is not necessarily related to this incident.

If you are the victim of a burglary or you discover someone inside your residence:

  • If possible, immediately leave your residence and go to a safe area (e.g., a neighbor’s apartment or a public place).
  • Call or text the UC San Diego Police Department at 9-1-1.
  • If you are unable to leave your residence, secure yourself and your family members in a safe location, turn on all available lights, and call the police immediately.

To help reduce the risk of being the victim of a burglary:

  • Make sure doors and windows are closed and locked. When it is hot out, use a lock or item that only allows the window to open small distances.
  • If you live on campus and your windows or doors won’t lock, please call Housing Maintenance at (858) 534-2600.
  • If your office windows or doors will not lock, please contact Facilities Management Customer Relations help desk, phone (858) 534-2930.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. If you see suspicious activity, call or text the UC San Diego Police Department immediately at 9-1-1.
  • Know the location of campus emergency telephones on routes to and from campus destinations.
  • Avoid displaying and/or placing high-value items close to windows. Items such as computers, cell phones, wallets, and purses can be easily grabbed from open windows and may be incentives for criminals to try and enter the residence. Secure your valuables at all times.
  • Be alert and aware. Pay attention to who is around when you leave and return to your residence or office. If returning at night, leave a light on inside as a visual deterrent.

If you witness suspicious activity or the theft of a micro-mobility device (motor vehicle) in progress:

Contact the UC San Diego Police Department immediately by calling 9-1-1 and be prepared to provide the following:

  • Location
  • Suspect description, including clothing
  • Suspect direction of travel
  • Anything the suspect is carrying (tools, weapons)
  • Description of e-mobility device

If you are the victim of a micro-mobility device (motor vehicle) theft:

  • Contact the UC San Diego Police Department by calling (858) 534-4357 and be prepared to provide the following:
  • Vehicle year, make, model, and color;
  • Date, time, location you last saw your micro-mobility device (vehicle);
  • Date and time you discovered your micro-mobility device (vehicle) missing; and
  • Advise if you subscribe to a micro-mobility device (vehicle) tracking service, such as AirTag or a similar device.

General safety considerations to prevent a micro-mobility device (motor vehicle) theft:

  • Always lock your e-mobility device (vehicle).
  • Park in busy, well-lit areas.  Pick a parking spot with a lot of activity.  Thieves prefer stealing e-mobility devices from isolated areas.
  • HDH offers Bike Lockers at multiple locations across Campus.
  • Transportation offers bicycle cages at multiple locations across the campus as well.
  • Protect Your Ride Micro-mobility Safety and Security video can also be found here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJRhfceGpo8
  • Install a vehicle tracking and location system that can be activated after the e-mobility device is reported as stolen.
  • Take a photo of the device with the serial number or other owner-applied identifiers to share if the vehicle is taken.
