Library Services Available During 2025 Campus Winter Closure

Building Hours

On Monday, Dec. 22, 2025, WongAvery Library will close at 6 p.m. and Geisel Library will close at 8 p.m. Both Library buildings will reopen on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, Geisel at 7:30 a.m. and WongAvery at 9 a.m. See the Library Hours page for current and future building hours. Visit the Reserve a Space page to make study room reservations for January 2 and beyond.

Online Resources

Access to online Library resources should be unaffected during the winter closure. UC San Diego students, faculty, and staff may access licensed resources using a secure login system called OpenAthens, allowing access using Active Directory (AD) login credentials. Using the campus VPN is the alternative way to access the Library's resources from off campus. For more information, please visit Connect to Library Resources.

Interlibrary Loan and Local Requests

Requests for Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and local material submitted during the closure will be processed in the order received beginning January 2, 2026.

To obtain UC San Diego-owned items prior to the closure, place requests by Monday, December 15, 2025, for pickup of items by Monday, Dec. 22, 2025. All facilities will be closed as of December 23.

Course Reserves

The Library is currently accepting course reserve requests for Winter Quarter 2026 at reserves.ucsd.edu. Requests submitted after Friday, Dec. 5, 2025, may not be available for student use until after winter quarter instruction has begun.

Streaming Media

Requests for streaming media to be used in Winter 2026 courses should be submitted as soon as possible through our Request a Purchase form. Contact streamingmedia@ucsd.edu with questions related to streaming media. Requests for Streaming Media submitted during the closure will be processed beginning January 2, 2026.

Information and Research Assistance

During the holiday closure, limited information and research assistance is available through the Library's 24/7 online chat service, with questions answered by librarians from non-UC libraries. Questions referred to UC San Diego librarians for further response, along with questions submitted by email, will receive replies on January 2, 2026, in the order received. Additionally, the following resources and tools can provide self-help assistance:

  • Get Help
  • Library Subject and Course Guides can help you locate and navigate our many resources

The employees of the UC San Diego Library wish everyone a healthy and happy holiday season.
