COMMUNITY ALERT BULLETIN – Attempted Robbery/ Carjacking

At 3:33 PM, the UC San Diego Police confirmed information that an attempted robbery occurred in the vicinity of the Whole Foods Market, located at 8825 Via La Jolla Dr, NOT on campus, in the City of San Diego. The San Diego Police Department reported that two suspects approached the victim, Suspect #1 has his hand in his hoodie pocket, demanded keys from the reporting party, and threatened to shoot her. No weapon was ever seen during this incident. The suspects were unsuccessful and ran behind the FedEx located at 8849 Via La Jolla Drive. The suspects were described as #1 - Male adult, late 20's to early 30's, with a beard or some other type of facial hair.  The second subject is was possibly related, described as a male adult in his 20's, wearing a black hoodie.

The remainder of this message provides general information about preventing and reporting a robbery, and is not necessarily related to this incident.

If you are a victim of a robbery:

  • Your personal safety is more important than money or merchandise.
  • Believe the robber if they say they have a gun, knife or other weapon.
  • Try to maintain a calm demeanor. Don’t make sudden moves or try to apprehend the suspect yourself. Concentrate on remembering a description of the suspect and when safe to do so, call the police immediately at 9-1-1.
  • Assess the situation. Remember every situation is different; you are the only one who can decide the appropriate course of action.
  • Seek medical attention as required.

To help reduce the risk of being the victim of a robbery:

  • Report suspicious activity immediately to the UC San Diego Police Department by calling 9-1-1.
  • Think ahead. Thinking about your options ahead of time and discussing them with others may help you make quick decisions under difficult circumstances.
  • Use the UC San Diego Safety Escort Program. Call (858) 534-WALK, available daily from dusk to dawn.
  • Whenever possible, travel well-lit, busy routes. Avoid walking or parking in shadowed areas. Have your keys in your hand as you approach your door. Avoid displaying and carrying large sums of money in public. Only carry the credit cards you need.
  • Be careful with purses or wallets. Carry a purse close to your body, but do not loop or wrap straps around you. A purse snatcher could injure you. Keep wallets in an inside pocket.
  • When using an ATM, have your ATM card ready and in your hand as you approach the ATM. Be careful that no one can see you entering your pin and do not count or visually display any money you received from the ATM.
  • Know the location of Campus Emergency Telephones on routes to and from campus destinations.
