MAPS Closure Announcement

Dear Campus Community,

UC San Diego Machining and Additive Prototyping Services (MAPS) has provided top-tier machine shop services to our campus and the greater community for more than 40 years. Unfortunately, due to rising costs and competition, we have made the difficult decision to close MAPS. This outcome follows extensive efforts to reduce the program’s financial deficit and boost its revenue; however, those measures have not been sufficient to sustain operations.

The closure of MAPS will take place on August 18, 2025. Following the closure, advanced machine shop services will still be available to campus at the Marine Science Development Center (MSDC) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. MSDC specializes in the design, development, fabrication, and assembly of advanced hardware across a range of scientific and engineering disciplines, from minute laser components to large-scale integrated systems. MSDC serves Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, other UC campuses and outside institutions.

We understand that this news may be disappointing to those who have relied on MAPS over the years, and we are deeply grateful for your support and partnership. We remain committed to supporting the machining needs of our campus community and encourage you to reach out to Rob Klidy (rklidy@ucsd.edu), manager of manufacturing operations at the MSDC, for future service. Thank you for being a valuable part of the MAPS legacy.

Sincerely,

Niraj Dangoria
