ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UC SAN DIEGO

Departure of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration

I am writing to announce the departure of Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Marie Carter-Dubois. Her last day will be August 31. Carter-Dubois is leaving her role at UC San Diego to assume the role of Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies here in La Jolla.

As Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration in Academic Affairs, Carter-Dubois is the chief financial and administrative officer for Academic Affairs and serves as a primary resource consultant for the EVC reporting units, and is responsible for providing high-level strategic direction, leadership, and planning as well as management oversight throughout Academic Affairs.

During her tenure in Academic Affairs, Carter-Dubois has played a pivotal role in transforming financial and administrative operations across the university. She led the creation of shared services for non-school units, streamlining operations, and improving service delivery. As the architect behind the Hypercare Team, she ensured consistent, hands-on support during major transitions, most notably in the stabilization of Oracle Financials Cloud (OFC). Marie’s collaborative approach fostered stronger connections between central campus and Academic Affairs, as well as among the academic vice chancellors, helping to break down silos and align priorities. She also spearheaded the development of a new financial model, which has the potential to provide more flexibility and transparency. Perhaps most notably, she cultivated a dynamic and supportive community among the assistant deans, laying the foundation for a more unified and resilient administrative culture.

Prior to joining UC San Diego, Carter-Dubois worked as Senior Director of Business and Operations Management in the School of Medicine at the University of Washington. She also previously worked at UC Davis as both the Assistant Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff to the EVC and Provost, and the Associate Dean for Finance and Administration for the School of Education. Carter-Dubois holds an MBA from the École des Hautes Études Commerciales (HEC) in Paris; a master’s in Corporate Strategy from the University of Paris (Sorbonne) and École Supérieure de Commerce de Paris; and a master’s in Marketing and International Management from EDC Paris Business School.

Please join me in thanking Marie Carter-Dubois for her service to UC San Diego, especially  within Academic Affairs. Her understanding of the strategic, financial, and administrative challenges facing academic institutions has served our university well. I wish her the very best in her new role.

During the interim, Adam DiProfio and Ahren Crickard will step up to, respectively, support the areas of Finance and Administration, and will report to me. The search for a new AVC-FA will commence immediately.
