We are pleased to announce the reappointment of David Song-Ruiter as Faculty Director of the Teaching + Learning Commons following a positive administrative review and recommendation of reappointment by the review committee.
In addition to his role as faculty director of the Commons, Song-Ruiter also holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Theatre and Dance in the School of Arts and Humanities. The review committee noted that the “Commons has demonstrated a significant and sustained impact on student academic success,” which they attributed to Song-Ruiter’s thoughtful guidance and strategic focus, and commended Song-Ruiter for his “strong commitment to equity, collaboration, and institutional transformation.”
The committee also praised Song-Ruiter’s leadership, including starting in his position during the pandemic and a time of growth and change at UC San Diego, during which he led the Commons into its current position as a more collaborative unit with a culture based in inclusivity. He was also commended for his contributions to the expansion and impact of student-facing services like Summer Bridge and Supplemental Instruction, his commitment to growing key faculty support services that align with culturally relevant teaching practices, and his dedication to strategic planning and program development.
