Holistic Teaching and Mentoring Evaluation Update |
Dear Colleagues,
As you are aware, UC San Diego is transitioning to a new holistic approach to the evaluation of teaching and mentoring. The Holistic Teaching and Mentoring Evaluation Oversight Committee (HTOC) oversees and supports this process. This message contains several updates and two opportunities for faculty.
First, the opportunities:
|
-
You are welcome to provide your feedback on the Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) forms by completing the SET instructor feedback survey. Also, please encourage your previous Instructional Assistants to fill out the SET IA feedback survey.
- Please consider opting in to Holistic Teaching and Mentoring Evaluation before it is required for all faculty in the 2027-28 academic year, so you can receive personalized support and help shape the process for the campus Contact holistic-teaching@ucsd.edu.
|
Next, the information and updates.
Student Feedback Forms:
|
-
SET form updates: In response to feedback from across campus, we have made a few minor changes to the SET questions which will go into effect in summer 2025. Updated graduate and undergraduate SET questions will now be unified and can be found on the SET website.
-
We want your feedback: Please fill out the SET instructor survey to let us know how SET forms are working for you and what updates you’d like to see for our next round of revisions.
|
Portfolio-Based Evaluation:
|
- Review criteria: Under the holistic teaching and mentoring evaluation model, candidates will be reviewed along the following dimensions, which have not changed since last year:
-
Updated portfolio formatting instructions: Working with CAP, we have refined the formatting instructions for teaching and mentoring portfolios in the portfolio instructions document. Highlights include that the portfolio should be submitted as a single PDF document that is no longer than 100 pages (shorter is strongly encouraged). Please make sure you follow the formatting instructions when submitting your portfolios.
|
Opting in to Holistic Evaluation:
|
-
Early adopter departments and faculty: With support from the HTOC and the Teaching and Learning Commons, the Bioengineering department, the Visual Arts department, and the College Writing Programs and Analytical Writing Program are the first full departments/programs to opt in to Holistic Teaching Evaluation in 2025-26. Several faculty members from Economics have also opted in.
-
Let us know if you are opting in this year! If you plan to submit a teaching and mentoring portfolio for your 2025-26 academic review, please notify us by emailing holistic-teaching@ucsd.edu if you haven’t already done so.
-
Seeking more early adopter departments for 2026-27: We have pushed out the campus launch of holistic teaching and mentoring evaluation to the 2027-28 academic review year, and we are seeking at least 15 departments to opt in for the 2026-27 year. You will get personalized support from the HTOC and the Commons, and help shape the process before it is a campus-wide expectation. Contact holistic-teaching@ucsd.edu to opt in or for more information.
