Following a national search, we are pleased to announce that college sports veteran Andy Fee has been selected as Director of Athletics for UC San Diego’s NCAA Division I Athletics program. Andy’s tenure will begin on September 15, 2025.
As just our third Director of Athletics in the last 50 years, Andy will oversee our nationally recognized 24-sport program and nearly 600 scholar-athletes as we move into this new era of NCAA Division I competition. A proven administrator and strategic leader, Andy brings more than 25 years of management experience within collegiate athletics. Most recently, he served as Deputy Athletic Director for Seattle University, and he previously served as Deputy Athletic Director & Chief of Staff at the University of Washington and Director of Athletics at Long Beach State University.
In addition to this leadership announcement, UC San Diego recently announced that we have accepted an invitation to join the West Coast Conference, one of the premier athletic conferences in the region. This move, which will occur in 2027, aligns with our long-term strategic plans for our nationally recognized Division I athletics program and will provide numerous benefits to our athletes, students, community and fans. This new chapter follows a historic year for Triton athletics, marked by milestones such as our first year of full postseason eligibility, conference championships in men's and women's basketball in the first year of NCAA Division I postseason eligibility, and a record 20 sports advancing to postseason competition.
Throughout our university’s history, the UC San Diego Athletics program has achieved remarkable growth and success, ascending from NCAA Division III to Division II, and ultimately to Division I. This journey has been marked by numerous national championships, conference titles, and academic accolades. Twenty of UC San Diego’s 24 sport programs participated in postseason competition this past season, and UC San Diego teams have captured four conference titles since beginning the transition to Division I.
UC San Diego made NCAA history in March, becoming the first program ever to qualify both its men's and women's basketball teams for the NCAA Tournament in its first season with Division I postseason eligibility.
Our scholar-athletes excel not only on the field, but also in the classroom. With more than 90% of our athletes earning a degree, we are proud to have the highest graduation rate among public institutions in Division I and II, reflecting our scholar-athletes’ exceptional dedication to both academic and athletic success.
With Andy Fee at the helm, we are poised to build on our remarkable successes and take the next step in our athletics journey. Please join me in congratulating Andy on his new role leading UC San Diego Athletics. We look forward to the many victories ahead.
Let’s go Tritons!
