Measles Protection, Symptoms and Support

Measles is a highly contagious and dangerous viral disease and cases are on the rise. Caused by the measles virus rubeola, 95 percent of recent outbreaks are in people who are unvaccinated or have unknown vaccine status.

Measles infection spreads starting four days before the rash, which is a common symptom, appears. The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left the area. Other symptoms include a fever that lasts a couple of days, followed by a cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes (pink eye) and small white spots inside the mouth. A rash appears 3-5 days after initial symptoms. It starts along the hairline and behind the ears, then spreads downward to the rest of the body.

The best protection against measles is the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is safe and highly effective. The MMR vaccine, which is a required immunization for incoming UC San Diego students (unless exempt), can slow down outbreaks and protect against infection as early as two weeks after vaccination. All campus community members should ensure their vaccinations are up to date with their healthcare providers.

Student Health Services is collaborating with multiple partners to enhance prevention and ensure prompt response to exposures. The care of our students, faculty, staff and patients is our highest priority. Thank you for your continued partnership and collaboration.
