The Common Read Committee at UC San Diego is pleased to announce the book selected for the second annual Common Read: “Talking Across the Divide - How to Communicate with People You Disagree with and Maybe Even Change the World,” by Justin Lee.
This book is an entry point and important guide in learning how to empathize and communicate with people who have widely differing opinions from your own.
Tritons Belong, Dialogue for Peace, So Say We All, and the National Conflict Resolution Center will host a series of events and activities related to the themes of the book throughout the fall quarter, including a campus visit from the author October 9.
The UC San Diego Common Read program identifies a book for new, first-year, transfer, graduate and professional students to engage in a shared experience as the newest members of our Triton community. Current members of the UC San Diego community are also invited to read the book and attend campuswide events. Visit the Common Read website for more information about the program, book, author, and events.
We would like to thank the Common Read 2025 Committee, which includes academics, administrators and staff from across UC San Diego, for their diligence throughout the selection process. Additionally, we would like to thank the hundreds of members of our community who completed the survey, provided feedback and thoughtfully engaged with this important program.
